Small Hawaiian
Ali'i Makau (fish hooks) are ¾ inch (19mm) wide x 1 inch high
(25mm). Hawaiians made their fishnets, fish line and canoe
rigging out of olona, a shrub that grows only in Hawai`i.
Our line used to wrap our makau is modern day wax twine, a
departure from old, but very durable.

Makau (fish hooks) comes threaded on black satin cord ready
to simply tie around the neck. We
recommend ordering the cord length you like from the drop
down menu on the subtotal page, and we will adjust the length
to allow enough length to comfortably tie the hook.
- If requested,
we can add
clasps for an additional cost. Simply select
'With Clasp Ends' from the options below. When ordering
clasp ends, ensure that you order the exact cord length required
to hang around your neck from end to end. Use some cotton
thread to get a feel for what length is comfortable for you.
We will adjust this length by approximately 1/2 inch (1cm)
to allow for the clasp end spacing.
- Do not attempt
to thread the Makau onto a chain, the twine wrap is not designed
for this application. If you want to use this jewelry
on a chain, it is highly recommended that you select the 'bale'
option from the choices below. We will cast a sterling
silver loop onto the back of the Makau, so that it can be
slipped onto a standard sized chain with ease.
